A “favicon” or “favorites icon” is a small image that is displayed by browsers (usually a logo) that is provided by the site being displayed.

I just signed on to a random wifi spot and I thought that it would be nice to have a favicon displayed next to the signal strength indicator. That image can be sent during the sign on process. The wifi protocol does not have to be changed. In fact, the whole thing can be done by a separate app that runs on the local machine or it can be built into the OS. If it’s a separate app, it can also be clickable and can present all sorts of promotional offers (coupons for coffee?) and helpful hints about the place that is offering the wifi (like location of the restrooms, menu, etc)

Whomever builds this, I’d love to hear from you.

And I am sure there were some similar failed experiments in this area, so if you’re aware of any I’d love to hear about those, too.
